Lat Long Labs was established in 2024 to simply answer the question - ‘Where do I go?’ It’s a doozy of a question. If we look at life’s major decisions, who to marry, which job to take, there are thousands of resources for matchmaking and job hunting. But, where should I go to college? Which city should I move to after college? Where should I raise a family? Where can I retire? Then the support becomes platitudes. Services that are available are not personalized to you. Services that try to connect you to schools or neighborhoods have business models operating with a conflict of interest to your best options.
If you’re a member of the sandwich generation trying to help someone else figure out these questions, good luck getting your teenagers or parents to balance entertainment with finances. Hang in there.
The guiding question of my career has been
‘what should we be asking data to do for humanity?’  When I know an answer in my bones, the stubbornness that comes out is comical, as long as you’re not in the splash zone. If you’re reading this, chances are you’ve flown on a plane being monitored by one of my systems (GE), used renewable energy from a system I’ve reviewed, or been connected to a new restaurant(Yelp), new hobby(Pinterest), new job opportunity(LinkedIn), or new person(LinkedIn & Facebook) in one of the other ML systems I’ve contributed to.
I’m not certain of how and I’m not certain of the magnitude of influence, but I am certain data should be supporting humanity figure out where to go. We have billions of moves ahead of us. After all, when it comes to improving our lives, moving is the oldest method. It’s time to ask data to do better than ‘Go West.’
